Cholesterol Modifications to Purified Diets

We can alter the cholesterol concentration of any purified diet; diets with high and low cholesterol concentrations are possible. Fat levels are usually decreased by making adjustments to the source of fat, and increased by adding cholesterol. These formulas can be "calorie-balanced" or "quantity-balanced." (For more information, see About Diet Formulas.)

Cholesterol – Cholic Acid – Atherosclerosis Note:  Many diets with added cholesterol also incorporate cholic acid (sodium cholate) to very effectively facilitate cholesterol absorption/utilization.  However, cholic acid appears to be contraindicated for atherosclerosis studies and is not used by most researchers for such studies.  Diet formulas can be modified to eliminate cholic acid.

Many examples of calorie-balanced fat-adjusted diets can be found at the Diet-Induced Obesity page; low-fat diets are often naturally low in cholesterol, and both the low-fat and higher-fat diets can have additional cholesterol added.
