"Sulfa-Trim" Diets

As you may require for therapeutic purposes in your research animals, we will add "Sulfa-Trim" to any LabDiet® grain-based food and into any custom TestDiet® product. The diet is then compressed into convenient pellets.

As with all our TestDiet® products, "Sulfa-Trim" diets are typically produced within five business days or less. Gamma-irradiation is provided free for all "Sulfa-Trim" diets; however, you may need to plan an extra 10 business days if you require irradiation.

Indications & Use
Sulfa-Trim diets have been developed to reduce respiratory risk in immuno-compromised mice ("SCIDS" – Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Syndrome).  Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole have been used to reduce occurrences of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.  Specific dosing is based on your unique requirements as determined by your veterinarian and/or lab management.

Four Standard “Sulfa-Trim” Diets

We commonly produce three "standard" "Sulfa-Trim" diets.  It is very important that the researcher and veterinarian know exactly which version is required for your animals –

#1a. SCIDS Tablets for Rodents

These contain a very concentrated dosage of 1.2% sulfamethoxazole and 0.2% trimethoprim in a base of LabDiet® 5001.  Each 5 gram tablet contains 10 mg Trimethoprim and 60 mg Sulfamethoxazole, and a flavoring making the tablet even more appealing to lab rodents.  One tablet per day should provide complete nutrition for most laboratory mice.  (Tableting is a cold and dry process that prevents degradation of the drug from heat or water.)

Specifications: TestDiet® Formula #5TXU

Irradiated 5-gram tablet = Product Code #1811315

Non-Irradiated 5-gram tablet = Product Code #1811234

#1b. Concentrated SCIDS Diet

Same as SCIDS Tablet, above, but in a regular diet form.

Specifications: TestDiet® Formula #5TYG

Irradiated ½“ pellet = Product Code 1811319#

Non-Irradiated ½“ pellet = Product Code #1811246

#2. Most Commonly Used Formula

A dosage of about 1/10th that concentration consisting of 0.124% sulfamethoxazole and 0.025% trimethoprim mixed into LabDiet® 5001 Rodent Diet.  This is the most commonly-used formula and the one that most closely resembles human "Sulfa-Trim" dosing.

Specifications: TestDiet Formula #5TXS

Irradiated ½“ pellet = Product Code #1811313

Non-Irradiated ½“ pellet = Product Code #1811232

(This concentration of medication has also been made in LabDiet 5053 (PicoLab) as TestDiet® Formula #58T7)

#3. A similar 1/10th concentration dosage of 0.124% sulfadiazine (rather than sulfamethoxazole) and 0.025% trimethoprim---comparable to another manufacturer's "Uniprim" diet.  Uniprim is the registered trademark for a veterinary medication for horses, which another manufacturer adds to food for rodent use. Sulfadiazine is far less expensive than sulfamethoxazole; there are conflicting data regarding its relative efficacy.

Specifications: TestDiet® Formula #5TXT

Irradiated ½“ pellet = Product Code #1811314

Non-Irradiated ½“ pellet = Product Code #1811233

Free gamma-irradiation sterilization is available for these products on request; however, you may need to plan an extra 10 business days if you require irradiation.
